Privacy Policy
The short version: KKB stores what you need to split bills with friends — your account, your entries, and the people you split with. Only you and the people you share an entry with can see it. We don't sell your data. Free accounts see ads from Google AdMob; KKB Plus and Remove Ads turn them off. You can delete your account and data at any time.
1. Who we are
KKB ("KKB", "we", "us") is a bill-splitting and personal finance app developed by Mike Lau in the Philippines. We are the personal information controller for the data described here, and we follow the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173). Questions: see Contact.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account: email address, password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider), username, display name, main currency, and an optional profile photo.
- Your entries: splits, expenses and income — descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, categories, who paid and each person's share, settled status, and item-by-item receipt breakdowns.
- Receipt photos you attach to entries (KKB Plus).
- People: connections with other KKB users, and names you type for guests who aren't on KKB.
- Event Splits, recurring entries, bookmarks, savings goals, and net worth accounts (names, institutions and balances you enter). We never ask for or connect to your real bank logins.
- Reports and blocks: if you report someone, we keep the reason, any details you write, and a copy of their name, username and photo at that time so we can review it. The person you report isn't told who reported them. We also keep the list of people you block.
- Messages to us, such as support emails.
Information collected automatically
- Push notification token for your device, so we can tell you when a friend adds a split.
- Crash and diagnostic reports (device model, OS version, app version, and what the app was doing when it crashed) through Firebase Crashlytics.
- Advertising data for free accounts — see Advertising.
- Purchase status — see Purchases.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, call logs, SMS, or browsing history.
3. Processed on your device
Some features run entirely on your phone and send nothing to us: reading text from receipt photos (on-device OCR), suggesting a category as you type a description, and the local copy of your data that lets KKB work offline.
4. How we use information
- To run KKB: sign you in, store and sync your entries, calculate balances, and show shared entries to the right people.
- To send notifications you can switch off in the app (new splits, settlements, connection requests).
- To process purchases and unlock KKB Plus or Remove Ads.
- To fix crashes and keep the service secure and working.
- To show ads to free accounts, which keeps KKB free.
- To answer you when you contact us.
We do not sell your personal information, and we don't use your entries to build advertising profiles.
5. Who can see your information
- Other KKB users can find you by username and see your display name and profile photo.
- People in an entry (and members of an Event Split) see that entry: its description, amount, date, who paid and their own share. They don't see your other entries, expenses, income or net worth.
- Share cards you choose to export are shared only where you send them.
- Legal reasons: we may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of users and KKB.
6. Service providers
We use these providers to run KKB. They process data for us under their own privacy and security terms.
| Provider | What for | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, database, file storage, server functions | Account details, entries, photos, connections |
| Google Firebase | Push notifications (Cloud Messaging) and crash reports (Crashlytics) | Device token, crash diagnostics |
| Google AdMob | Ads for free accounts | Advertising ID, device and ad-interaction data |
| RevenueCat, Google Play, Apple App Store | Subscriptions and in-app purchases | Your KKB user ID, purchase history and status |
| Groq | Optional "enhanced scanning" that improves how receipts are read | The receipt photo and the text read from it |
| ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com) | Daily currency exchange rates | No personal information |
Some providers store data outside the Philippines. We choose providers that protect data in transit and at rest. Receipt photos sent for enhanced scanning contain whatever is printed on the receipt; avoid scanning receipts with information you don't want processed.
7. Advertising
Free accounts see native ads from Google AdMob in the Recent feed. AdMob may use your device's advertising ID and similar data to show and measure ads, and may show personalised ads where permitted. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalised ads, in your device settings (Android: Settings → Google → Ads; iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking). KKB Plus and the one-time Remove Ads purchase turn ads off. Learn more in Google's advertising policies.
8. Purchases
Purchases are handled by Google Play or the Apple App Store; we never see your card or bank details. RevenueCat tells us whether your KKB account has KKB Plus or Remove Ads, using your KKB user ID.
9. Device permissions
- Camera — only when you choose to photograph a receipt.
- Photos — only the images you pick, for receipts or your profile photo.
- Notifications — to alert you about splits and requests; you can turn this off anytime.
10. Retention & deletion
We keep your data while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Profile → Account settings → Delete my account) or on our account deletion page. Deletion removes your profile, entries, photos, connections, net worth and other data immediately; your shares on friends' entries are removed from them. Routine server backups roll off within 30 days. Purchase records may be kept by Google, Apple and RevenueCat as required for tax and accounting.
Using KKB without an account
If you choose Try KKB without an account, we create a private guest account with no email or password. What you log is stored on our servers like any other account, but other users can't find or see it. You can save it as a full account at any time by adding a username, email and password; everything stays. A guest account is deleted, with all its data, when you sign out, or automatically after 60 days without opening KKB. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data also loses access to it.
11. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Database rules let each person read only their own data and the entries shared with them. Photos are stored privately and shown through short-lived links. No system is perfectly secure; please use a strong, unique password.
12. Your rights
Under the Data Privacy Act you may ask to access, correct, or delete your personal information, object to processing, and receive a copy of your data. You can edit your profile and entries in the app, and delete your account yourself; for anything else, email us. You may also file a complaint with the Philippine National Privacy Commission (privacy.gov.ph).
13. Children
KKB is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
14. Changes
We'll update this page when our practices change and revise the effective date above. For significant changes we'll also tell you in the app.
